Leading Managed Technology Service Provider GCI are delighted to announce the completion of a number of IT projects for The Works, the UK’s principal value retailer of art and craft materials, toys, books and more.

The Works offers a range of over 40,000 products both in its 400 stores and online, enabling its 22.5 million customers to shop 24/7. However, an ageing network and infrastructure was not living up to the company’s high standards, and a new solution was needed in order to address existing challenges and work towards their business goals. Having provided their WAN to all sites for over 10 years, The Works turned to GCI for a new Cloud-based infrastructure, robust network connectivity and Unified Communications to support high call volumes. The Works’ “Dual Datacentre Policy” also required them to have a second location to store all data as a backup.

GCI provided The Works with a fully resilient circuit across their new HQ and Warehouse, plus 3G routers so they are always covered in the rare event of any downtime in the primary WAN; crucial in the retailer sector where connectivity is heavily relied upon for online transactions and payments. SIP Trunks were also installed to allow The Works’ phone systems to operate using an internet connection instead of a traditional phone line.

The Works’ now have the capability to comfortably double in size to support future requirements without any significant architectural changes, and the solution is robust enough to support increasing capacity on the network. Further benefits include complete redundancy, improved call handling, a reduction in waiting times and significant cost savings, ensuring they can continue to deliver a fantastic service to their customers.

Tom Scott, IT Director at The Works, said: “With the ambition to have 600 stores by 2020, we needed to know we had a reactive partner that could provide a seamless and scalable IT solution to match. A trustworthy partner who have the experience and expertise to fulfil our requirements and support our expansion plans, GCI are exactly the right fit for our business. Their support enables us to move forward as a business and remain ahead of the game in the competitive retail sector.”
