This weekend, around 39,000 runners took part in the Virgin Money London Marathon, with two members of GCI among them!
Lyndon Evans is a veteran of three previous Marathons and, alongside his wife Lucy, completed the race at 7 hours 18 minutes. Keith Lourie has been training with Lyndon for the last six months and although he is a Marathon newbie, Keith registered an impressive 5 hours 10 minutes – despite pulling his hamstring on mile 15!
As you might expect from two technology experts, the Cloud has played a pivotal role in their training as they have made use of mobile apps such as Endomondo to track each other’s runs, as well as to provide support and advice over the long winter training months. They’ve even used the video function of Skype for Business whilst running to gee each other up!
Lyndon explains: “Both myself and Keith have personally been affected by cancer and we wanted to give something back. Tenovus do fantastic work for those affected by the condition and have developed pioneering treatments as well as providing vital support. Even though it’s my third Marathon the training doesn’t get any easier! Training with Keith – either in person or virtually using technology has given us both a boost as we’ve braved the cold and the rain over the last few months.”
Lucy celebrated with a gin and tonic which Lyndon has carried on the Marathon, and we can only presume will have been very much shaken rather than stirred over the 26.2 miles! As of the day after the Marathon Keith and Lyndon’s fundraising total is £1,918.75, although the money is still coming in...so they may well hit the £2,000 target very soon.
